The prospect of aliens descending from space to either threaten or engage human seems very far-fetched. Such a prospect would never occur. I can’t but help but muse about a popular European notion during the late 19th century during the hey-day of the second industrial revolution, that assumed everything that could be created and discovered had already been created and discovered. History has proven otherwise. In the last century, mankind has done more to advance civilization than the last millennium. The point being we can never say never.
So should an ambassador be appointed and how should the said ambassador execute his or her duties?
Well, an ambassador has been appointed by the UN in the appointment of the Malaysian astrophysicist, Mazlan Othman ,and there is a framework and paradigm developed for alien engagement under the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).
The series of actions devoted towards the outreach and engagement of extraterrestrials will be my motivation to attend the Rally to Restore Sanity.
When the world is recovering from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and world-wide violence at a fever-pitch ( just to list a few indicators of the current context in which I’m presenting my view), the UN appoints an ambassador to carry out duties rooted in frivolous Cold War suspicions.
This is a case of a creative imagination that was created after World War II and has managed to sustain itself through conspiracy theories and Hollywood block-busters.
Instead of focusing on more relevant issues such as fulfilling the Millennium Development goals, the UN is diverting concern to a trivial pursuit.
From a constructivist view-point, we have no experience with aliens, therefore any attempt before contact to create a method of engagement will be futile. The identity and interest of extra-terrestrials is something that is unknown and will never be known unless contact occurs. Appointing an ambassador, a construct of diplomacy invented by humans for humans really does not make any sense when it comes to engaging non-human life forms. All we can do is anticipate.

I agree that humans have not had an experience with "extra-terrestrial being" before and therefore we should not focus so much energy in creating this whole detailed plan for the arrival of an alien. I feel that there should be at least a basic procedure to be prepared if something were to happen and wait for the anticipation. Having an ambassador is a good idea because if aliens were to come, eventually someone is going to have to present themselves up front and speak to the outsiders right?
