Of all of the political theories that we have studied in World Politics, I found that I related the most and best to Constructivism. The part that I really connected to was the idea of altercasting, treating others the way you want to be treated. I think that this idea is idea can be used in a really positive way. I feel like if all nations really took this idea to heart and acted with respect and openness to other nations, we’d be living in a better world. Yes, I realize how starry eyed I sound, but I’d like to believe we live in a world where the most powerful individuals (presidents, prime ministers, kings etc.) can approach situations positively.
I also really connected with the idea that Wednt presented about not being forced into the Hobbesian view of humans. I felt that Wednt took a stance that made the human race seem more real and hopeful. The idea that we’re not all predestined to have “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short” lives was refreshing and more realistic. I feel that the constant reevaluation that Constructivism allows gives this theory a more pragmatic feel. Overall, the Constructivist viewpoint is the first IR theory that we’ve looked at that I’ve felt a connection with. Perhaps I’ve connected with it most because it does allow me to be just a little starry eyed…
