Playing Diplomatic Risk was amazing. I had never played it before and playing for the green team allowed me to observe from the vantage point of an expanding power. The diplomacy aspect of the game was most interesting; power politics were in effect with diplomats trying to hammer out decisions favoring their states. The negotiations were also characterized by compromise, which isn’t surprising. In order to secure something for the state, diplomats have to give and take. The degree to which negotiations represented actual diplomacy was astounding.
Our team was not able to win the game. The hegemon not surprisingly was able to complete its objectives. However, since the hegemon was already in a state of preeminence, its objective did not seem difficult to acquire. Our objective on the other hand was incredibly ambitious given the resources and territories in our possession. Our team did not seem to get anywhere through the whole game; we were locked in attrition with other ambitious powers.
