Jump into a time machine and go back in time. Imagine you are five years old. It is Sunday so after going to the park, your dad takes you to the ice cream shop to get ice cream sundaes. While waiting in line, you become bored and offer to find a table to sit at. Your dad asks you what flavor you want, but you ignore him and stroll off. After a few minutes, he comes back with two vanilla cones, but you start fussing because you wanted a chocolate sundae. Next thing you know, you're crying your lungs out. Your dad had asked you what flavor you wanted, but you ignored him so it is not his fault that he bought you a different flavor of ice cream.
During our discussion about elections in the United States on Monday, one of the comments that I found interesting was when Julie said that people in the country are always complaining about the government, yet when it comes to elections, they don't vote. I feel that in a democratic country, it's important that its citizens vote because their input in each law that is passed or not helps the government to serve the public better. If people are not voting, then the government does not know how the citizens feel about each law that is passed. The generations before us did not fight for voting rights for it to go to waste. We were given the right to vote, so why not use it? In a way, I feel that people who do not vote are subjecting themselves to the government like in a monarchy where people are taxed but the ruler controls what happens in the county. I believe that we should continue to live in a society with elections because it allows for us to make decisions for our benefit.
Garry,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your point. It is our rights as US citizens to utilize our right to vote! Sp many people do not take advantage of this amazing right we have! For example in the 2008 elections voting turnout was only 56.8%. (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0781453.html#axzz0zxELfCGK) I feel that in order to get voter turnout rate percentages up we need to find the source of why so many people are not voting, and try to fix it.
